Admiral Thomas Charles Hart (June 12, 1877 – July 4, 1971) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Thomas Hart was born in Michigan on 12 June, 1877 and entered the U.S. Navy by appointment to the Naval Academy from his home state on 19 May, 1893, becoming a member of the Class of 1897.[1][2] His first service at sea after graduation was an appointment to the battleship Massachusetts on 29 June, 1897.[3]
Hart was appointed to the training ship Hartford on 2 October, 1899, remaining with her until 11 October, 1902, when he returned to the Naval Academy on assignment, having been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 1 July, 1902.[4][5]
Hart was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 16 August, 1903.[6]
Hart was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1909.[7] Hart was appointed to the battleship Minnesota on 30 September, 1914.[8]
Hart was promoted to the rank of Commander on 29 August, 1916.[9]
Hart was appointed Commander, Submarine Flotilla Three on 30 July, 1920. While holding that command, he promoted to the rank of Captain on 7 February, 1921.[10]
Hart was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 1 October, 1929.[11]
Hart was appointed as a member of the Navy's General Board in June 1936, and used his position to press for the construction of small submarines for local defense work. Two prototypes were built in the late 1930s, but although successful they appeared too late to take momentum away from the large "fleet boats" that were mass produced throughout World War II.[12]
Hart was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 25 July, 1939.[13]
