Captain (retired) John Ignatius Hallett, D.S.O., R.N. (24 June, 1886 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hallett was acquitted on a charge of being drunk on shore by a Court Martial on 15 May, 1907.[1]
Hallett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 December, 1907.[2]
Hallett proposed a new type of torpedo director around 1910, which eventually came to be referred to as Hallett's Director.[3]
Hallett was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 36 on 9 January, 1912.[4]
His torpedo director was tried at sea and rejected by the Royal Navy's Torpedo School in 1914.[5][6]
Great War
Hallett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 December, 1915.[7]
On 24 January, 1916, seemingly in his new command appointment in Talisman, Hallett failed to follow up on a search for a submarine and the Commander-in-Chief recommended that he be removed. The Admiralty disagree with this course in light of Hallett's previous record and admonished him to try harder in future. Hallett seemingly took this second chance seriously, and was commended for his zeal in pursuing submarines on 21 February, 25 May and the night of 25-6 June, 1917. It was this last attack for which he was awarded a D.S.O..[8]
Hallett was appointed to Implacable for command of the trawler Joseph Connell on 5 August, 1918. He left her on 3 February, 1919 when he was appointed to command the patrol boat P17.[9]
Hallett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1920.[10]
In December, 1926 he was urged to be more cautious after a collision between Newark and Burslem. In August, 1927 there was an additional accident with Simoom on entering Albert Harbour in Greenock. Gentle admonition was the result.[11]
Hallett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 23 June, 1932 and placed on the Retired List the next day at his own request.[12]
World War II
He was appointed in command of the Armed Merchant Cruiser Cormorin from 14 September, 1939 to 6 April, 1941.[Citation needed]
Called up for Special Service, vice Harrison-Wallace on 7 July, 1941 and granted the rank of Captain while in the appointment.[13]
