Captain John Francis Benjamin Barrett (6 February, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Barrett was born in Farnham, Surrey.[1]

Barrett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1908.[2]

Great War

Barrett was appointed to Bacchante for the Test Mobilisation in July, 1914. On 1 August, he was re-appointed to the ship as her Torpedo Officer. He remained there until 10 February, 1916 when she paid off. On 1 March, he was appointed to Forth as Torpedo Officer and for duty with submarines of the Tenth Submarine Flotilla.[3]

Barrett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1916. He continued to serve in Forth and her submarines, as she moved to the Eighth Submarine Flotilla briefly and then to the Ninth Submarine Flotilla in September, 1916. On 9 April, 1918, he left Forth and went to Vernon as Lieutenant-Commander (T). He would be there through the end of the war and beyond.[4]

Post-War

Barrett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1920.[5]

Barrett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1927.[6]

Barrett was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cleopatra in December, 1928. He was superseded in her on 14 February, 1929.[7]
