Admiral SIR Arthur Francis Eric Palliser, K.C.B., D.S.C., Royal Navy (20 July, 1890 – 22 February, 1956) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of a merchant Palliser entered the Navy as it was transitioning to the new training scheme for cadets and was sent directly to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth as part of the September 1905 intake term.
Palliser was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1911.[1]
In July, 1914, he was appointed to Tyne for command of reduced T.B.D.s.. He spent the early portion of the war at H.M.S. Excellent before being appointed to Exmouth for gunnery duties on 9 February, 1915. He left Exmouth when he was again sent to Excellent on 1 September 1917.[2]
On 17 February, 1918, he was appointed to the light cruiser Comus as first and gunnery officer.[3]
Palliser was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1919.[4]
Palliser was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1924.[5]
On 18 November, 1929, Palliser was appointed to Warspite, additional, as fleet gunnery officer. He was superseded in this role on 26 May, 1930.[6]
Palliser was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Tiger on 15 May, 1931 and was promoted to the rank of Captain shortly thereafter, on 30 June, 1931.[7]
On 20 November, 1936, Palliser was appointed to Cumberland, additional, as a Commodore, Second Class to serve as Chief of Staff to Command-in-Chief, China, vice Attwood.
World War II
Palliser was appointed in command of the battleship Malaya in May, 1940. In a Court of Enquiry following the loss of the destroyer Hyperion to a mine on 22 December 1940, it was determined that Palliser had been "most neglectful in not reporting that Ilex was standing by.[8]
Palliser was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1941.[9]
Palliser was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 7 February, 1944.[10]
Palliser was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 16 May, 1947.[11]
