History

From November, 1904 to November, 1906, the Third Cruiser Squadron was commanded by Rear-Admiral Sir Hedworth Lambton.[1] He was succeeded by Rear-Admiral Henry D. Barry, who hoisted his flag at Portsmouth in the Bacchante on 10 November, 1906.[2] Rear-Admiral Sir Henry B. Jackson assumed command of the squadron on 16 October, 1908.[3] It is assumed that upon the reorganisation of the Home Fleet in mid-1909, the Third Cruiser Squadron became the Sixth Cruiser Squadron, and the name Third Cruiser Squadron was given to nucleus crew ships at the Home Ports.[Inference]

Rear-Admiral Charles E. Madden assumed command of the Third Cruiser Squadron on 11 December, 1912, and was succeeded on 19 December, 1913[4] by Rear-Admiral William C. Pakenham.[5]

Carnarvon had been flag from 20 November to 22 December, 1905.[80]

December, 1912

A handwritten diary records the roster as:[82]

December, 1913

The same diary records the same roster, but also makes the flagship clear.[83] From September, 1914 (at least), the Squadron is attached to the Home Fleet.

The roster would remain the same until September, 1915.[84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95]

September, 1915

Argyll is removed for duties "in Home Waters or on detached service."[96]

This roster would apply for just one month.

October, 1915

Devonshire and Roxburgh now have been detached for duty "in Home Waters or on detached service" as Argyll rejoins, but Argyll would be wrecked and lost on 28 October.[97]

This roster would apply for just one month.

November, 1915

Argyll has been lost, and the other two cruisers have returned.[98]

This roster would apply until May, 1916.[99]

May, 1916

The Squadron is now listed a few pages later than previously, suggesting that although it (like the {UK-BS|3}}) is still attached to the Grand Fleet, it no longer operates with the Battle Fleet.[100]

This roster would apply for just one month.

June, 1916

The Squadron is again listed prominently right below the Battle Squadrons of the Grand Fleet, suggesting that losses at the Battle of Jutland have caused a shortage of armoured cruisers to screen the Battle Fleet.[101]

This roster would apply until September, 1916.[102]

September, 1916

The Squadron has been dissolved, with Devonshire going to "Home Waters or on detached service", and Roxburgh and Antrim being assigned to the North America and West Indies Station.[103]

April, 1925

The former Third Light Cruiser Squadron has been redesignated as 3 C.S. some time around September 1924. It would continue to operate in the Mediterranean Sea under its new name.

Since July 1924, Concord has been temporarily attached to the Australia Station. Other formations in the Mediterranean at this point are the First Battle Squadron, Third Battle Squadron, the First Cruiser Squadron, four destroyer flotillas and aircraft carriers Hermes and Eagle.[104]
