Vice-Admiral John Edric Blaxland, Royal Navy, Retired (13 May, 1847 – 20 July, 1935) was an officer in the Royal Navy in late 1800s.

Life & Career

Blaxland entered the service with the December 1860 intake term at Britannia, his examination scores ranking him eighteenth of thirty-four candidates accepted for naval cadetships.[1]

Blaxland was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 22 October, 1870.[2]

For services rendered during the operations in Egypt, Blaxland was specially promoted to the rank of Commander with seniority of 18 November, 1882.[3]

When Griffon touched ground on 18 May, 1887, Blaxland was enjoined to exercise more care in future. On 10 August, 1888, the Italian Government relayed its thanks to him for assisting the shipwrecked crew of a brigantine, the Fratellanga.[4]

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1890.[5]

On 18 March, 1896, Blaxland was appointed to Penelope, additional, to serve as Naval Officer in Charge, Ascension. He was superseded in command there on 30 May, 1899, but did not report giving up command until 14 July. He arrived home in England on 27 July.[6]

Blaxland was appointed in command of the battleship Hood on 12 December, 1900 when that ship replaced Thunderer.[7]

Blaxland was superseded in command of Hood on 19 April, 1902 but remained in command pending arrival of his successor, Robert Swinburne Lowry. Blaxland was retired on account of his age in accordance with the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870 on 13 May, 1902. Lowry arrived two days later and relieved him.[8]

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 September, 1907.[9]
