Captain (retired) John Hamilton Macnair, (9 May, 1895 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of a retired East India Merchant.
After a few months in Good Hope, Macnair was appointed to the battlecruiser Inflexible in November, 1912. He fought in her at the Battle of Jutland and was thereafter promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1916.
On 10 May, 1917 he started a training course in submarines. On 9 July, he was appointed to Titania for service in submarines. Later that year, it was specified that he was to be in J 3.
He served in K 3 from 25 February to 22 August, 1919 when he was appointed to L 7.[1]
On 10 August, 1921, he was appointed in command of Group "F" Submarines in Reserve, upon his relief early in 1922, he was appointed in command of the "H" Class submarine H 33.[2]
On 21 August, 1923 he was appointed to H.M.S. Revenge.
Macnair was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1924.
Macnair was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1930.
World War II
Macnair was promoted to the rank of Captain on 9 May, 1945.
Reverted to the Retired List on 6 July, 1946.
