Born in Adelaide, South Australia.
Married Marguerite Blanche Home Douglas on 6 May, 1916.[1]
On 7 October, 1916, he was sent to an infirmary in Edinburgh after being seriously injured in a motor accident, thus ending his command of Ascot. This rendered him unfit until 16 June, 1917, by which time he had been promoted to the rank of temporary Lieutenant R.N.R. on 29 April, 1917. He was appointed to command the minesweeper Blackmorevale on 11 July, 1917.[2]
On 18 February 1918, Douglas was sent to Portsmouth to attend a minesweeping course at the navigation school. On 12 March, he was sent to Vernon for one week's instruction in using the Actæon sweep under orders of the commanding officer of the Third Fleet Sweeping Flotilla. On 4 April, he was sent to Scapa for command of a minesweeping trawler that is either unnamed or simply illegible in his service record.
On 22 August, 1918, Cotswold collided with the trawler William Ivey and drifter Ruler of the Sea. Douglas was cautioned, but no further action was taken.[3]
