Lieutenant Herbert Wiley Jackson (3 May, 1894 – 2 May, 1951) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Jackson was born in Kansas and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating near the bottom of the Class of 1917 and being commissioned Ensign on 30 March, 1917. Due to the rapid wartime expansion of the Navy, he was quickly promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 1 July, 1917.[1] Jackson was further promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant on 1 February, 1918.[2]
During the war, Jackson served aboard battleship North Dakota. By 1921, he had been promoted to the permanent rank of Lieutenant, on 1 July, 1920, had briefly served as the first commanding officer of destroyer James K. Paulding, and was undergoing submarine training.[3][4] Later that year, he was appointed commanding officer of submarine R-24 and remained in command until 1924.[5][6]
Following his relief, Jackson served at the Portsmouth Navy Yard. He resigned his commission on 15 May, 1925.[7][8] Jackson joined the Naval Reserve later that year, but there is no evidence yet uncovered of his serving on active duty in either peace or war as a Reservist.
