Admiral SIR Arthur Henry Limpus, K.C.M.G., C.B., Royal Navy (7 June, 1863 – 3 November, 1931) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Arthur Henry Limpus was born in St. Neots, Huntingdonshire, on 7 June, 1863, the son of the Reverend Henry Francis Limpus, one-time Minor Canon of St. George's Chapel, Windsor, and Vicar of Twickenham.
Limpus was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1885.[1]
On 18 July, 1889, he was loaned to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 64 for manoeuvres.[2]
He was appointed First Lieutenant and Gunnery Lieutenant ("1st and G") of the new battleship Jupiter on 8 June, 1897.[3]
Limpus was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1898.[4]
Captain
Limpus was specially promoted to the rank of Captain on 2 May, 1900, for services in South Africa.[5]
He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Gibraltar in March 1901.[6] He remained in her until December 1904.
He was appointed in command of the battleship Albion on 30 October, 1907.[7]
Flag Rank
Limpus was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 23 January, 1909.[8]
On the occasion of King George V's coronation he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 19 June, 1911.[9] He was succeeded by Rear-Admiral Arthur Y. Moggridge in command of the Portsmouth Sub-Division on 17 November.[10]
Great War
Limpus was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 14 September, 1914.[11] He was appointed Admiral Superintendent of Malta Dockyard on 20 September, 1914.[12]
He was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.) on 1 January, 1916.[13]
Limpus was appointed President of the Shell Committee, which received its terms of reference on 2 March, 1917.[14] He left the Shell Committee on 26 June, being succeeded by Captain Frederic C. Dreyer, the Director of Naval Ordnance.[15] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 30 January, 1918[16]
Post-War
He placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 1 January, 1919, at his own request.[17] He died at Alassio, Italy on 3 November, 1931.
