H.M. T.B. 54 (1885) | |
---|---|
Builder: | John I. Thornycroft & Company[1] |
Ordered: | 30 April/1 May, 1885[2] |
Launched: | 28 August, 1886[3] |
Sold: | 1 August, 1919[4] |
H.M. T.B. 54 was one of 53 first-class torpedo boats of the 125 Footer class.
Construction & Service
On 11 September, 1893 as T.B. 24 tried to pick up her mooring in Devonport harbour, she ran into T.B. 54 and holed her aft, causing the compartment abaft the engine room to flood. A rush to prevent her foundering succeeded, and a collision mat was placed over the hole as she was secured against the harbour wall. An ash ejector was kept running to keep her afloat until she could be docked.[5]
In 1895, she was one of thirteen T.B.s of 125 feet or greater length and four smaller ones stationed in Devonport.[6]
Around 1906-1907, with the issuance of torpedo boat numbers to the first of the Cricket class torpedo boats, the existing Torpedo Boats numbered 25 to 79 had a "0" prepended to their number. This vessel, therefore, became T.B. 054.[7]
