Service

In late 1920, submarines M 1, M 2 and M 3 were allocated to submarine reserve group "C" at Portsmouth, under the collective command of Commander Hubert Vaughan-Jones and tender to Dolphin.[6]

The was reduced to Reserve on 20 August, 1924[7] and shared a common commander with M 2: Lt. Cdr. Alec Murray Carrie.

By 1925, M 1 was in the Fifth Submarine Flotilla, which ventured to Oban and to Antwerp. By November, it had acquired the moniker of the Anti-Submarine Flotilla, arriving at Yarmouth on November 9. A rather large exercise involving M 1 and submarines L 17, L 22 and L 17 was conducted in the Channel south of Dartmouth. On the 12th, in rough seas and good visibility, M 1 failed to rendezvous with the other submarines.[8]

It would turn out that M 1 was lost in collision in the English Channel with Swedish steamer S.S. Vidar, resulting in the death of Carrie and all 68 men aboard.
