The U.S. Naval Academy was established in 1845 is located in Annapolis, Maryland.

Superintendents

The first superintendent was Commander Franklin Buchanan, appointed 3 September, 1845. Other superintendents in our scope's "pre-history" were Commanders George P. Upshur (15 March, 1847) and Cornelius K. Stribling (1 July, 1850).

Commandant of Midshipmen

This post was essentially the second-in-command of the Academy, and presumably had a greater role as "dean of students".[8]
