Vice-Admiral George Trewby, C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (19 October, 1874 – 23 April, 1953) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Trewby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1895.[1]
He was appointed to St. Vincent as first lieutenant on 16 June, 1903.[2]
Trewby was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1905 and left St. Vincent upon her paying off on 12 January, 1906. He would then be appointed to Cressy as commander on 13 March, remaining only until 11 July, 1906 when he switched to the battleship Queen for an appointment lasting four months.[3]
Trewby's first appointment in command of a ship came when he received a four-and-a-half month stint in command of Adventure on 10 August, 1911. On 30 December, he was appointed in command of Active of the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla. This posting would endure to the end of 1913.[4]
Trewby was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1913.[5]
The Great War
Trewby was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Crescent in July, 1914, joining the ship and taking command at 4pm, 31 July.[6]
He was appointed Captain of the armoured cruiser Kent on 30 June, 1916.[7]
Post-War
On 10 July, 1919 Trewby was appointed a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George:
- For valuable services as Flag Captain and Chief of Staff to the Rear-Admiral Commanding, 10th Cruiser Squadron.
He served as captain of Ajax from March 1922 to August 1923.
On 1 November, 1923 Trewby was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Barttelot. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 November.[8] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 12 June, 1928.[9]
Trewby died at the age of seventy-nine on St. George's Day, 23 April, 1953, at 94 Richmond Hill Court, Richmond. He was cremated at Mortlake Crematorium on 28 April.
