Admiral SIR Bertram Sackville Thesiger, K.B.E., C.B., C.M.G. (14 January, 1875 – 12 May, 1966) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Thesiger was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant dated 14 April, 1895.[1]
Thesiger was promoted to Commander on 1 January, 1905.[2]
He was appointed to Wildfire for command of Sheerness Depot. on 1 July, 1908. He left this post to take up command of Scylla on 13 January, 1909. He would command Scylla until, 24 May, 1911 on the Western Indies Station.[3]
Thesiger was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1912.[4]
He attended the Royal Navy War College from 3 March 1913, placing second of nine captains.
Having just completed the War Course at Portsmouth, he was appointed to Pembroke for command of the War College at Chatham on 12 April, 1913.[5]
Thesiger was lent to Pembroke to assist in trials of Arethusa and was to take command of her upon commissioning.[6]
He was appointed command of the light cruiser Inconstant on 25 October, 1914,[7] through the Battle of Jutland.[8]
He was appointed command of the battlecruiser Inflexible on 21 August, 1917,[9] and of the light cruiser Calypso in November, 1917,[10] staying with her at least through the surrender of the German fleet.
Thesiger had a late command stint in King George V, being appointed on 26 October, 1920.[11]
World War II
Thesiger was appointed to Eaglet additional for work with the Liverpool Convoy Pool on 14 March, 1940, serving as a Commodore, Second Class in the Royal Naval Reserve.
On 9 June, 1942, he was appointed to Forte additional as Flag Officer in Charge of Falmouth, serving with the rank of a Rear-Admiral. He was superseded in this role on 1 March, 1944. He was superseded by Vice-Admiral George Frederick Basset Edward-Collins on 31 May, 1944 and was reverted to the Retired List the next day.[12]
