Admiral Edward George Shortland, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (2 November, 1855 – 7 April, 1929) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Shortland was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 10 August, 1881.[1]

Shortland was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1894.[2]

Captain

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1900.[3]

He was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser St. George on 15 March, 1904.[4]

He commanded the battleship New Zealand from 16 July 1906 until 31 December, 1907.[5]

Shortland was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 June, 1909, vice Windham.[6]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903 Shortland was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 11 April, 1912.[7]

Great War

Shortland was mentioned in despatches by the Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal Sir John French in February, 1915.[8] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 5 March,[9] and was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 25 August, 1918.[10] On the occasion of the King's birthday Shortland was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1915.[11]
