Commander (retired) Philip William Carwithen Sharpe, R.N. (1 March, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Queenstown.[1]
In July 1901 he was granted leave to undergo an operation.[2]
Sharpe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[3]
In March 1909 he was in Haslar Hospital to be treated for Scarlet Fever.[4]
Sharpe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913. During the war, he would serve in St. George, which was a depot ship for Ninth Destroyer Flotilla until May 1915, at which time he was appointed to the monitor Raglan for navigating duties. He was ordered to return to England on 30 July, 1917.[5]
Sharpe spent the last half of 1917 working with Sperry gyrocompasses and other such devices. In 1918 he served in the pre-dreadnoughts Dominion and Commonwealth.[6]
In 1920, Sharpe was in Chatham Hospital to be treated for neurasthenia.[7]
Sharpe was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 25 July, 1926.[8]
In 1933 he grappled with chronic appendicitis.[9]
World War II
Sharpe was not in good condition, suffering from pneumonia and other ailments. He worked as a Consular Shipping Adviser at Marseilles and Middleborough.[10]
