Lieutenant-Commander John Sharpey Schäfer (29 June, 1881 – 22 March, 1918) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of E. A. Schäfer, professor of physiology was born in Boreham Woods, Herts.[1]
Schäfer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1902.[2]
Schäfer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1910.[3]
Schäfer was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 1 April 1912, and was to be promoted to the rank of Commander upon reaching age forty. This would not transpire, however.
He was called up to serve in the Great War, being first appointed as Captain in Charge, Singapore, temporary. He was called back to England in November, 1914. In early 1915 he was appointed to King George V, additjonal, for navigation and surveying duties in the acting rank of Commander. On 7 November, 1917, he was appointed to the convoy sloop Gaillardia, additional.[4]
Although he had been appointed to an illegible ship, additional, for Staff of the Rear Admiral (M) and for surveying duties on 4 March, was killed in the sinking of Gaillardia on 22 March, 1918. Perhaps the illegible ship was Gaillardia, or his leaving the ship had been delayed.[5]
