Supplementary Lieutenant George Levack Mackay Napier (22 June, 1881 – 9 January, 1918) served in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Napier was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 March, 1909 and to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 March, 1911.[1]
Napier transferred to the Royal Navy at the rank of Lieutenant on the Supplementary List on 1 September, 1913. On 28 October, he was appointed to Tyne, which was acting as a depot ship for the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla. He would remain in her until 18 DEcember, 1915.[2]
On 10 December 1914, Napier was admitted to Queensferry Hospital for an ocular disease. On 21 December, he was admitted to Haslar Hospital. He was deemed fit on 11 January, 1915.[3]
At some point (date hard to read), Napier's only Royal Navy evaluation by a Captain Compton noted that Napier was below average and that he lacked the qualities of a naval officer. "Ship was slovenly and state of discipline not good. Slovenly in appearance."[4]
He was appointed to the destroyer Contest from 2 January (or July?) 1916, possibly seeing action in her at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla. He left her upon being appointed in command of T.B. 21 on 19 July 1916.[5]
Napier drowned when his command, Racoon was sunk on 9 January 1918.[6]
