Admiral Arthur John Horsley, Royal Navy, Retired (3 March, 1853 – 7 April, 1937) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Horsley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 16 April, 1878.[1]
Horsley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1891.[2] On 17 August, 1892 he married Eva Donne.[3]
In March 1896, Horsley departed Bermuda in the composite screw sloop H.M.S. Pelican to relieve the screw sloop Buzzard at Nassau..[4]
Horsley was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1898.[5] On 30 August, 1899 he remarried, to Mary Lyse Stoughton.[6]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Magnificent in October, 1900.
Horsley took command of Northampton on 3 November, 1902[7] but found himself Court Martialed and blamed for for grounding Northampton in 1904 and reprimanded. Oddly, he was also commended for refloating her![8]
He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Hawke in November 1904, remaining with her until the 9 July, 1905.
On 4 April, 1907 Captain Horsley was again blamed for grounding a ship, this time the armoured cruiser Achilles. It was declared that Horsley should have issued "special instructions" to avoid this misfortune.[9]
Flag Rank
Horsley was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 1 September, 1907, vice Giffard.[10] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, dated 20 September.[11]
He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 31 July, 1912.[12] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 9 June, 1916.[13]
