Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. John Dagleish Hindmarsh, D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N. (4 June, 1882 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Hindmarsh was promoted to the rank of Temporary Lieutenant R.N.R. on 29 March, 1915.[1]
Appointed in temporary command of Waverley from 9 May to 15 August, 1916 and again from 23 August to 23 September, 1916 when he received an appointment to command Eridge.[2]
The Admiralty primarily blamed Hindmarsh for a collision between Eridge and Vigilant on the night of 1/2 January, 1917. He received an expression of severe displeasure, and was to be relieved in command, but it appears that he may have kept at it. He was praised in the aftermath of the mining of Haldon striking a mine on 7 August, 1917, but it is not clear if he was in Haldon or still in command of Eridge.[3]
Hindmarsh was promoted to the rank of Temporary Acting Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1919.[4]
Hindmarsh received a D.S.O. and a D.S.C. for his work in minesweeping.
