Admiral (retired) Henry Schank Hillyar, C.B., R.N. ( – 3 August, 1893) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hillyar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 December, 1842.[1]

Hillyar was promoted to the rank of Commander on 25 February, 1853.[2]

Hillyar was promoted to the rank of Captain on 13 November, 1854.[3]

He was severely reprimanded following a Court Martial on 21 April, 1863. This may have been in connection with his irregular direct correspondence with the Foreign Office.[4]

He commanded the ironclad frigate Royal Oak from 14 December, 1867 to 7 January, 1871, suffering a collision in her with Warrior in October, 1868.

Hillyar was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 February, 1872.[5]

Hillyar was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 16 September, 1877. He was placed on the Retired List on 1 April, 1884 and was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 8 July, 1884.[6]

He died at Plympton. His widow, Anna, received a pension of £120 per year.[7]
