Admiral Henry Dennis Hickley, Royal Navy, Retired (11 December, 1826 – 22 December, 1903) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hickley was promoted to the rank of Captain on 16 February, 1864.[1]
Hickley's central battery ironclad Iron Duke collided with Richard Dawkins's Vanguard in fog on 1 September 1875, sinking the Vanguard. Captain Dawkins was severely reprimanded and dismissed his ship following a Court Martial that criticised his role in the collision. Neither Hickley nor any of the crew of Iron Duke was subjected to a Court Martial despite their obvious complicity in the fog-bound misadventure.[2]
Hickley was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 January, 1880, vice Dowell.[3]
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 22 June, 1886, vice Clanwilliam.[4] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List dated 5 April, 1892.[5]
