Commander (retired) Lewes George Gardner, R.N. (20 November, 1886 – 22 April, 1957) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Sandy, Bedford.
His first appointment was in the armoured cruiser Leviathan on the China Station on 15 September, 1903. After switching the Sutlej in January, 1905, gardner was appointed to the battleship Jupiter of the Channel Squadron on 17 May, 1906.[1]
Gardner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1909.[2]
Great War
Gardner was in Agamemnon when the war broke out, having been appointed in her in March, 1914. Gardner was mentioned in despatches for service in the evacuation of Gallipoli in March of 1916. He left Agamemnon when he was appointed in command of the destroyer Colne on 9 May, 1916.[3]
Gardner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1917.[4]
Gardner was appointed in command of the destroyer Munster on 16 September, 1918.[5]
Post-War
Gardner was appointed in command of the destroyer Tenedos on 13 November, 1919.[6]
He married Violet Amy Calero Hale on 5 May, 1920.[7]
In 1920, he lost a torpedo in Valorous and was told to be more careful in future.[8]
In 1925, he began a year in charge of inactive destroyers and then commenced a short course at Excellent. At the end of 1926, he began work as an instructor for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Superseded at the end of July in 1928, Gardner was appointed to Dauntless on reducing. He left her on 20 May, 1929.[9]
Gardner was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 4 November, 1929.[10]
World War II
Gardner was mobilised on28 September, 1938. In August, 1939 he was made Maintenance Commander, Dover. Superseded on 8 September, 1941, he was made Royal Naval Officer, Scarborough, vice Ewart (?).[11]
In 1942, he transitioned to a training capacity. He reverted to the Retired List on 11 January, 1946 and was granted permission to visit Australia for a period estimated to be two years.[12]
Gardner died on 22 April, 1957 in Perth, Western Australia. His wife died 7 June, 1969 in West Perth.[13]
