Vice-Admiral Raymond Fitzmaurice, K.B.E., D.S.O., (7 August, 1878 – 25 October, 1943) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Born in London, the son of G. Fitzmaurice, who worked with the education department at Whitehall.
Fitzmaurice was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1901.[1]
As a Lieutenant in April 1913, he was awarded an aviation certificate, having flown a Short biplane out of the Central Flying School in Upavon.[2]
Fitzmaurice was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1913.[3]
Fitzmaurice was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1918.[4] He would command several of the dreadnoughts in the 1920s.
In May 1925, Fitzmaurice was appointed in command of the battleship Resolution as Flag Captain and Chief Staff Officer to Rear Admiral F. H. Mitchell. In March 1926, he assumed command of the battleship Iron Duke on the transfer of flag. He was superseded on 30 September 1926 and took up an appointment at the Army School, Sheerness.
Fitzmaurice was placed on the Retired List on 2 September, 1929.
World War II
In 1939, Fitzmaurice was called back to service, being appointed to Eaglet II in September with the rank of Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R.. He succumbed to angina on 25 October, 1943.[5]
