He left her when he was retired as physically unfit on 26 April, 1918.  On late August 1918, he was admitted to Plymouth Hospital for "acute alcoholism."
 
Dewar's death was reported by a letter from his older brother Captain [[Alfred Charles Dewar|Alfred C. Dewar]] dated 21 June, 1958 &ndash; fully sixteen years after James had died.

Lieutenant-Commander James Forest Dewar, R.N. (29 June, 1881 – 5 May, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Edinburgh and raised by his mother, Flora, James Dewar gained eight months' time on passing out of Britannia on 15 May, 1897.[1]

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March, 1903.[2]

His wine bills in Æolus were found to be too high in January, 1911.

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 March, 1911.[3]

Dewar was appointed in command of the destroyer Nereide on 10 April, 1914.[4]

In September 1914, his Nereide collided with S.S. Valegarth and Dewar was cautioned for having failed to take full instructions for his passage to Devonport.

On 28 November 1915, he grounded Aster in Xeros Gulf and was cautioned to be more careful in future.

On 16 December 1915, he was admitted to hospital in Malta with neurasthenia. He was sent back to England, arriving on 25 January 1916 and admitted to Plymouth Hospital.

He was invalided from command of H.M.S. Geranium and returned to England on 3 October 1917 for treatment at Haslar Hospital for debility. On 8 January 1918 he was deemed fit for shore service, but he was soona appointed to Apollo. He left her when he was retired as physically unfit on 26 April, 1918.
