Commander (retired) Richard Lionel Dearden (16 July, 1883 – 1 February, 1955) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve before transferring into the Royal Navy in 1913.

Life & Career

Dearden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the Supplementary List on 1 September, 1913. He served briefly in Invincible before being appointed to Active on 15 January, 1914. He served in her until being appointed to the light cruiser Castor in November, 1915.[1]

Dearden was at the Battle of Jutland, serving in Castor, which was flag cruiser of the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla. He left her on 15 November, 1919.[2]

Dearden was appointed in command of the destroyer Rival on 1 January, 1921.[3]

Dearden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 September, 1921.[4]

Dearden was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 9 July, 1923.[5]

World War II

In 1939, he commanded a group and anti-submarine trawlers.[6]

He died on 1 February 1955.[7]
