Captain (retired) John William Brown, (29 June, 1849 – 11 July, 1917) served in the Royal Navy's navigation branch.

A younger man by the same name served in the R.N.V.R..

Life & Career

Brown was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 10 August, 1877.[1]

Brown commanded the storedship Humber from 12 May, 1890 through 5 January, 1894, being promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1890. In June, 1895 he commenced a period of service in the Coast Guard at Waterford.[2]

Brown was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 22 March, 1898.[3]

He was discharged from Yarmouth Hospital on 19 September, 1912. He was being treated for dementia.[4]
