U.S.S. Maryland was one of six Pennsylvania Class armoured cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.

She was commissioned on 18 April, 1905 with Captain Royal R. Ingersoll in command.

She was renamed U.S.S. Frederick on 9 November 1916 to free her name for the new battleship Maryland.
