H.M.S. Vanguard was one of four Audacious Class central battery ironclads completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
In 1875, Vanguard was based at Dublin as guardship of the Eastern Irish District when she participated in the summer cruise in which she and the guardships Iron Duke, Warrior and Hector visited the home ports. In a suddenly-gathered fog which caused complete loss of visibility, Iron Duke rammed Vanguard after a small sailing vessel's appearance required Vanguard to slow and turn to port into the path of Iron Duke astern. Vanguard had been holed beneath her armour by the ram bow of the other ship and was soon lost. Captain Richard Dawkins was severely reprimanded and dismissed his ship despite the fact his mistakes seemed minor compared to those of Iron Duke's Captain Henry Dennis Hickley, who received no such scrutiny.
