Rear-Admiral Julian Francis Chichester Patterson, O.B.E. (6 May, 1884 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy
Life & Career
Patterson was born at sea, the son if a Reverend J. E. Patterson, eventually of Pitchford Rectory, Shrewsbury. Julian Patterson gained four months' time on passing out of Britannia and was appointed temporarily to Hannibal in mid-May 1900 to await the commissioning of H.M.S. Glory.[1]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1904 and won the Beaufort Testimonial for that year. In the annual manoeuvres of that year, he was given command of T.B. 27 and incurred Their Lordships' displeasure by colliding with a steamship. Perhaps as a result, it was recommended him "for gunnery duties in a small ship."[2]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 January, 1912.[3]
Patterson was appointed gunnery officer of Orion on 3 January, 1914, remaining in that position through 1917.[Citation needed]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.[4]
Post-War
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1921.[5]
Patterson was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Hood on 27 April, 1931.[6]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 October, 1933.[7]
