Commander George Stanley Thornley, D.S.O., R.N. (10 December, 1877 – 28 September, 1944) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Worcester. Thornley nearly wiped out of the Navy by failing Navigation twice, but he was granted a third trial in 1899 which did the trick.
Thornley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.
Thornley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1908.
On 22 January, 1915, Thornley was appointed in command of all armed vessels for organised naval operations at [illeg].
Thornley was granted the acting rank of Commander on 17 March, 1915.
In October 1916 he was appointed in command of the Tanganyika Flotilla. This work carried through to May 1918.
Thornley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1918.
Thornley was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 20 June, 1922.
