Captain Lionel Fitzgerald Maitland-Kirwan, R.N. (10 July, 1879 – 21 September, 1951) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Born in Bellrigg, the son of collier L. M. Kirwan, Esq..
Maitland-Kirwan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1901.
Maitland-Kirwan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1910.
Appointed to H.M.S. Lion as executive officer from 31 March, 1915 to 9 January, 1918, participating in the Battle of Jutland. Captain Chatfield felt that he possessed a "good power of command."
Maitland-Kirwan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December 1917.
Maitland-Kirwan spent four months on R/A Hyde Parker's Committee at the Admiralty before he was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Talbot on 11 June, 1918 for command, assuming command on 26 July.
Post-War
On 19 January 1921, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Concord.[1]
In June 1921, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cardiff.
Maitland-Kirwan was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon expiration of his Foreign Service Leave, which occurred on 17 March, 1923.
