Admiral Thomas Barnardiston, Royal Navy, Retired (4 December, 1833 – 21 January, 1907) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
On 5 April 1853, Barnardiston was gazetted while still a Mate for "severe and gallant action" against the Burmese at Donahew.[1]
Barnardiston was promoted to Lieutenant with seniority of 3 February, 1855.[2] On 20 August of that year, he was gazetted for his work with rocket boats in the bombardmen of Sveaborg, Finland.[3]
In 1858 while serving as first officer in the wood screw frigate Curacoa, Barnardiston was court martialled over a collision and received a reprimand.[4]
Barnardiston was promoted to Commander with seniority of 24 June, 1862.[5]
Barnardiston was promoted to Captain with seniority of 14 August, 1868 while serving in Nymphe.[6] In October of that year, he was reprimanded for twice allowing Nymphe to ground.
Barnardiston commanded Rover from late 1875 to May of 1879 and then Belleisle from 1880 to 1881 before being appointed in command of the floating battery ship Terror on 9 March, 1881. He was superseded in her on 28 April, 1884.[7]
Barnardiston was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 January, 1886.[8]
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 10 September, 1891, vice Salmon.[9]
In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, Barnardiston was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 28 December, 1891.[10] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 23 August, 1897.[11]
