Rear-Admiral (retired) John Gorham Hewitt (24 November, 1858 – 28 December, 1913) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hewitt was appointed to the destroyer Pelican on 23 May, 1881. He was invalided from her with a hernia on 23 June, 1882. While unfit, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1882. He was not found fit before 26 October, 1882. On 4 January, 1883, he reported to the Royal Naval College for study. On 1 September, he was appointed to Repulse, but at the end of the year joined Iris in the Mediterranean.[1]
On 8 March, 1887, Iris paid off and Hewitt started 44 days of leave at full pay. Before this elapsed, he was appointed to Lily of the North America squadron as first lieutenant.[2]
Hewitt was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1895 and appointed to Sirius in lieu of a lieutenant.[3]
Hewitt was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1901.[4]
Hewitt elected to travel to England for an operation, arriving home in Oceana on 11 December 1904. He was fit on 7 April, 1905.[5]
Hewitt was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Juno on 27 June, 1905.[6]
Hewitt was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 14 June, 1906 and promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 January, 1911.[7]
