Captain Bertram Hornsby Smith, C.B.E., R.N. (13 December, 1874 – 18 November, 1945) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the latter half of the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth centuries. He was placed on the Retired List in 1915 but rose to become Director of the Mercantile Movements Division of the Naval Staff.

Early Life & Career

He was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 31 December, 1904.[1]

Smith was promoted to the rank of Captain dated 30 June, 1912.[2]

Great War

He was appointed in command of the battleship Vengeance on 15 August, 1914.[3]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, Smith was placed on the Retired List dated 7 September, 1915.[4] His retirement was cancelled on 16 March, 1918.[5]

Post-War & Retirement

On 16 September, 1919, Smith was appointed a Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.): "For valuable services at the Admiralty during the War."[6] In late 1919 he applied for the position of Second Naval Member on the Commonwealth Naval Board.[7] He returned to the Retired List on 1 February, 1920.[8]

Smith died at The Nursing Home, Chubb Hill, Whitby, on 18 November, 1945.
