Captain (retired) Eric Quintin Carter (12 June, 1883 – 30 October, 1938) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Aldershot.
Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[1]
Carter was appointed to the battlecruiser Invincible on 16 May, 1911, following two and a half years in command of torpedo craft. After a year in her and a brief spell at the Royal Naval Barracks in Portsmouth, Carter was appointed to the new destroyer Christopher, to take command upon her commissioning. She joined the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla, eventually to be operating in support of the Grand Fleet.[2]
Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.[3]
Great War
Carter remained in command of Christopher until being appointed in command of Mandate on 26 October, 1915 and then to the Ruby on 4 November and very soon thereafter, transferred to the "M" Class destroyer Nessus.[4]
Carter would command the destroyer Nessus of the Twelfth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[5]
Carter was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916.[6]
Cater was appointed in command of the destroyer Lurcher on 10 December, 1916 and would finish out the war in her.
Post-War
Carter was appointed in command of the submarine Shark on 27 May, 1919.[7]
Carter was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 20 February, 1930.[8]
