Vice-Admiral Francis Murray Austin, K.B.E., C.B. (10 September, 1881 – 19 June, 1953) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Austin was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1902.[1]
Austin was gunnery officer of Temeraire until 1913.
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1913.[2]
He served as captain of Leviathan from February to April 1918, when he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Astræa.
Post-War
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1919.[3]
Austin served as captain of Iron Duke from August 1927 until 1928, then of the Benbow from May 1928 to 1929.
Austin was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 8 April, 1931.[4]
Austin was promoted to Vice-Admiral on 1 January, 1936 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.[5]
World War II
On 4 September 1939, he was appointed to Victory was Commodore of Convoys, Second Class R.N.R., to work with the London Convoy Pool. He later moved to the Liverpool Convoy Pool. In late 1942, he was made Inspector of Merchant Ship Gunnery and as Adviser on Small Ships' Gunnery. A series of similar appointments followed before he was reverted to the Retired List on 29 February, 1946.[6]
