Captain Melville Adams Hawes (12 December, 1886 – ) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Shanghai and raised by a merchant uncle, Hawes was an interpreter in German and a gunnery specialist.
He served in Venerable as gunnery officer and German interpreter from 8 January, 1913 to 6 January, 1914 and moved directly to Colossus, where he served in her until 11 January, 1918. He finished the war in the Operations Division, staying there until 1 October, 1920.
Service in Barham, Dunedin, Chatham, Southampton and Calcutta took him into 1924. He then switched to work in the Naval Intelligence Division and remained there until 1933.
He married Dorothy Stanhope Hobart Kay on 31 January, 1920.
He was still alive and doing work with the Navy into 1945, but September of that year featured a stay in Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham for Bell's Palsy.
